Sexual and Reproductive Rights
Sexual and reproductive rights are fundamental human rights that encompass the right of all individuals to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health free from coercion, discrimination, and violence. These rights include access to comprehensive education, family planning, safe and legal abortion, maternal healthcare, and protection from gender-based violence. Health education plays a critical role in empowering individuals—particularly women and girls—with the knowledge, autonomy, and confidence to make decisions about their bodies and lives. In many parts of the world, lack of access to accurate and age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health education continues to hinder public health outcomes. Young people, especially adolescent girls, often receive incomplete or incorrect information due to cultural taboos, restrictive social norms, or inadequate educational systems. As a result, they are left vulnerable to early and unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, unsafe abortions, and gender-based violence. Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), which includes information on human development, reproductive anatomy, contraception, consent, relationships, and sexual orientation, has proven effective in delaying sexual initiation, increasing contraceptive use, and reducing rates of STIs and adolescent pregnancies.
